Save on your electric costs by using an AC timer
If you own a holiday rental property on the Costa del Sol, you probably know what it’s like to deal with tenants that leave your air conditioning on day and night! Whether they’re off to the pool, the beach, out for a meal or even just sat on the terrace, many holidaymakers seem to leave the air conditioning on 24/7, without considering the impact that it might have on not just your bills, but the environment too.
With the rise in electricity and energy costs all over Spain and Europe, this lax approach to leaving the air conditioning on could leave you with hefty bills to pay at the end of the month, even when your guests are long-gone!
A great way to resolve this issue is to install an air conditioning timer – a handy device that lets you and your holidaymakers pre-programme the air con system ahead of time, allowing enough cold (or hot) air to circulate throughout the property, without needing to leave it on all day and night. You and your guests can choose from several different intervals: ¼ hour, ½ hour, 1 and 2 hours, to help minimise its use and to keep your costs down – winner!
If your problem isn’t about forgetful holidaymakers, but instead you find yourself falling asleep and waking up to find the AC on full-blast or forgetting to switch it off when you leave the house, then an air conditioning timer is perfect for you too! With no standby light either, you’ll save energy and keep your costs down with this easy fix.
If you would like to know more about installing an AC timer, or anything regarding air conditioning on the Costa del Sol, just get in touch with us here at Cool Services. We cover the whole coast including Estepona, Marbella, Mijas, Fuengirola and Benalmadena. With over 17 years of experience in installation, maintenance and repairs, in both residential and commercial properties, make Cool Services your go-to choice for air conditioning on the Costa del Sol.

Ready for a Cosy Christmas
If you don’t have a log fire in your home on the Costa del Sol, then you’ll be needing to put the heating on this Christmas to get nice and cosy for the celebrations ahead!
Whilst the Costa del Sol might not seem like a place that you’d need to pop the heating on, what many people fail to realise is the lack of central heating in Spanish homes! Most homes on the Costa del Sol are built to be kept cool, so they’re not great at holding heat. To combat this, many people have installed air con units to use in both summer and winter, helping to keep your home nice and cool in the summer, but warm and toasty in the winter.
Winters on the Costa del Sol can feel particularly cold, especially when living right beside the sea or inland, so these types of dual hot/cold air con systems are key to keeping your home warm this winter.
We’ve put together our top tips for this Christmas season to keep your home on the Costa del Sol nice and warm throughout the season’s festivities!
Get your air con checked
If you’ve managed to hold off on putting the heating on so far this winter, then you might find a surprise when you come to switch it on again after the summer. Regular servicing helps to keep your air con in clean, working order all year round. Our preventative maintenance service costs as little as €50 and includes a thermostat check, refrigerant level check, inspection of the lines for any leaks and damage, as well as cleaning all the filters and an air temperature check.
Clean your filters
It’s amazing how much dust can gather in your air con and how much it can affect it if it’s not cleaned regularly! First, determine if your air filter can be cleaned, as some different types of air conditioners have filters that are meant to be disposed of after a certain amount of time. If yours can be washed, simply pop open the face of the unit and retrieve the filter, then gently wash it with warm soapy water. Once it’s thoroughly dry, pop it back in and you’re good to go. If yours can’t be washed, it’s not a problem, just give it a good brush or vacuum through to remove all the dust and debris.
New air conditioning for winter
If you’re wanting to beat the rush and get your air conditioning ready ahead of summer 2023, or perhaps just keep warm for the winter, then just get in touch with us. We work with many different brands, as well as both split wall air conditioning units and ducted air systems. With our wall units, many brands even offer the ability to provide humidity control and ventilation to prevent damp and moisture from building up in your home.

Is Your Air Con Ready For Winter?
Refreshingly cool air is a must during Costa del Sol summers, but is your air con ready for the cooler winter months ahead too?
Is Heating Needed on the Costa del Sol
Famous for its sunshine, the Costa del Sol may not seem like the obvious candidate for heating installation or maintenance in Marbella, Fuengirola, or elsewhere along the Costa del Sol, but as winter approaches, summer temperatures go steadily down and can be quite the change from the blistering heat the area can be known for, especially for those who live in Spain year-round.
Mornings and evenings can be chillier than you realise too, and inland can get particularly colder than you expect, even for areas that are well-known for warm summer days and nights. Having adequate heating, therefore, is an important part of staying comfortable at home or work in Spain this winter.
Preparing Your Air Con For Winter
Like the air con servicing you’ve likely done in preparation for the summer months, preparing your air con for winter is an important step in making sure your home remains at a comfortable temperature and lowering the chances of it requiring serious maintenance or repair later on, saving you time and money -particularly important over the holiday season!
Regular maintenance is the best option for making sure your air con is ready for winter, and putting your trust in a certified air con specialist is the easiest and most beneficial way of ensuring your home, office, or building’s air con is ready for winter. They’ll be able to not only check your air con’s functionality, but its efficiency, too, which can save you expense in repair or replacement costs as well as through significant energy efficiency.
At Cool Services, our preventative air con maintenance includes a number of checks that will ensure your air con works effectively and efficiently through the winter months as well as it did through the summer. For as little as 50€, we’ll check and clean the thermostat, check the refrigerant charge level, inspect the unit’s visible lines for leaks or other damage, clean all the filters, and confirm the air temperature output to double-check all our work. Should you need or want it, we can also take on the repair or installation of air con units to get your home winter ready.
Cool Services have been in business for over 16 years, offering air con maintenance, air con repair, and air con installation for happy clients up and down the Costa del Sol, from Sotogrande to Estepona, San Pedro to Marbella, Fuengirola to Benalmadena, and inland. As the autumn approaches, now’s the time to get your air con service appointment booked and ensure your heating is working and running as effectively as possible in time for winter. Give us a call at Cool Services to request a call out for your air con maintenance check and make sure your home is comfortable all season long, no matter what the weather.
Read MoreSpain’s New Air Con Law Now in Place
A new Spanish law is in place regulating air con usage and it’s kicking up quite the stir -but it’s not as bad as you may think. Already passed and put in place across Spain, air con thermostats are required to be set no lower than 19º and no higher than 27º year-round, a warmer-than-you’d-like scenario for plenty of people in the country, particularly expats, and particularly on the Costa del Sol where the average winter temperature is 9º and summer temperatures average around 30º but regularly soar to the 40ºs. It’s definitely caused a commotion in the country, but does that mean you should give up on the idea of having air con in your home or business to keep a comfortable temperature no matter what the weather outdoors? In short, no. And here’s why:
Air Con in Business
If you own a business on the Costa del Sol and are thinking of getting an air con unit for it, don’t let this law stop you! Most Brits have been shown to prefer a 21º temperature setting most of the year and Spaniards generally view 19º as “mild,” meaning in the spring, autumn, and winter, your air con can be easily set to very close to the ideal temperature for most activities. And although it seems too warm, a low of 27º in the summer will still feel refreshingly cool when you’re walking indoors from a Spanish summer heatwave! Tourists need not worry, either, as hotels may be required to keep within the set air con parameters, but only in public areas, meaning you can set the air con in your hotel room to any temperature you like for a relaxing Spanish-style afternoon siesta and great night’s sleep every night.
Air Con at Home
Like your hotel room, your home is considered a private space and air con is not regulated in any way, so you’re still able to install air con at home and use it as little or as much as you like, all year long, so the new air con law in Spain won’t affect you at all.
Keep in mind, too, that this new air con law was set as a means of upholding a recent EU agreement to cut European dependency on Russian oil and combat climate change at the same time, so you can feel good about adhering to the new air con temperature regulations for both environmental and ethical reasons. Ultimately, this will save you money, too, which is a nice silver lining to the situation, if you ask us. And Spain’s new law on air con temperatures is only in force until 31 December, 2023, so it’s not a permanent adjustment, either -but perhaps just enough to encourage new habits and permanently lower your heating and cooling costs.
All in all, we know keeping in line with the new air con law in Spain, especially areas like Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola, Benalmadena and inland across the Costa del Sol will be an adjustment, but perhaps not as terrible as one as many initially thought.
If you’re looking to install air con or maintain or repair the one your have at home or in your business, Cool Services can help with qualified, F-Gas certified technicians who are trained in offering the best air con services so your unit is as reliable as it is cost-efficient. How To Use Your Air Con and Cut Energy Costs at the Same Time
Summer in Marbella is HOT! Thank goodness for air con, right? But with the rise in the cost of electricity (again), there’s an ever-increasing hesitation to switch that much-needed air con unit on, even in the full heat of summer. If that sounds familiar, never fear! Cool Services is here to help! Not only can we help you find and install the most energy-efficient air con units for your home, apartment, or villa anywhere on the Costa del Sol, we can offer practical tips and advice to getting the most out of the unit you already have so you can relax in cool comfort at home or work this summer.
The Most Economical Use of Your Air Con Unit
Using a humidifier or fan in combination with your air con to boost the chill in the air, keeping your unit’s filter clean for optimum performance, keeping your window blinds down during the hottest part of the day, switching off your air con when not at home, and switching it on low and slow when you are, are all great ways to get the best use out of your air con and keep your home or work cool without using excessive electricity. But what if you’re doing all that and are still finding that your bill isn’t going down as much as you hoped?
Looking Beyond Your Air Con to Cut Electricity Costs
Sometimes, despite your best efforts to get the most economical use of your air con unit, your electricity costs simply won’t go down. The easiest solution then, is to simply switch it off. But for many people living or holidaying on the Costa del Sol (us included!), that simply isn’t an option, especially in the summer when temperatures soar to sweltering, unbearable temperatures every day. If that’s the case for you, you may want to consider cutting electricity costs elsewhere so that you can keep your air con unit on as long as you like. Here’s some quick and easy ways you can consider:
- Unplug appliances when you leave a If it’s plugged in, it’s using electricity, even if it’s not switched on!
- Get outside. Spend as much time outdoors as possible, especially in the cooler morning and evening times. In the afternoons when it’s too hot to be out, find yourself an air-conditioned restaurant, beach club, shopping centre, or museum to spend a few hours Just don’t forget to turn off your air con at home when while you’re out!
- Pay attention to your electricity tariff. In Spain, electricity costs are determined by the time of day you’re using it and can be significantly more economical during off-peak Washing your laundry, doing your ironing, even charging your phones, laptops, and tablets at night rather than during the day can all help cut your electricity cost overall so you can justify switching on your air con for just that little bit longer during the day.
- Don’t use a hair dryer. Hair dryers are notorious for using high amounts of electricity, so give yourself permission to let your hair dry naturally (it won’t take long this time of year!) or try taking your showers and drying your hair in the evening so that the cost of using your hair dryer will be
Investing in air con is a great idea -if not an absolute necessity, if you’re living on the Costa del Sol, and you needn’t worry too much about the cost of running it. With the right unit, professional installation, and regular maintenance, economical use of your air con is absolutely possible. And there’s plenty of other options to cut energy costs, too, so you can keep your home cool and your budget in check, even during summer in the south of Spain.
Whether you’re living in Estepona, Marbella, Benalmadena, or anywhere in between, Cool Services will gladly offer you advice on the all the top brands, their features, and their energy usage (even a free in-home consultations) and provide on-site installation, maintenance, or repair with F-Gas certified technicians so you get the the best air con unit for you, running in peak performance, all year long, for as little as possible.
